Advice

DONT FORGET TO DO YOUR BLOGS!

It is as easy as that to get a 100 for your blog grade, but you are screwed if you forget to do them! The only way I remembered was to set a weekly alarm on my phone to remind me. It only takes 5 min normally to do your blog and voila, easy A. This pretty much goes for Prof Rogers entire class though, just dont forget to go and do your stuff and you should get your A for your 3 hours. P.S. If you are actually reading this, tell Angie hey for me!!!!

Ethics

I did not like this ethics project to be honest. It was just hard for me to find good documents that are original about the historical lapses. The most interesting thing to reflect on was the amount of crazy and ridiculous things humans do to others. People will experiment on women and children, or just mass murder others with no problem. I did find it interesting that the guilty parties would write in the style they did, very "around the bush" if you may. The indirect approach is like a dead give away of them being shady and doing bad things. Other than the class examples, i didnt see any other good examples but im sure they are all the same.

Unethical Issues

I am sure every blog you have read has said this same thing about the stats, those are crazy! I would have never thought that 3 in 4 full time workers would encounter "ethical lapses" or that 1 in 10 believe a scandal or ethical lapse is going on at their company right now! I can definitely understand the being distracted stat because of course people are going to be distracted when they see or hear about the shady stuff going on at their work. They could be worried about stock plans or job loss. I was also a little bit surprised at the division of people's thoughts on how to handle the situations that arise. I would never think to handle some unethical action myself. I would always take it to my supervisor or manager because being caught up in something like that is the last thing I would need. I also understand why people choose not to report the issues because the system of reporting is not adequate.

Web vs Paper

I do not think that the two are that different. I think the main thing is your audience because that decides how formal and strict you need to follow grammar guidelines. If my audience for this blog was an executive deciding if i get a job i would be more formal, but since this is just a weekly blog i am not as concerned about it being grammatically correct. The one difference that stands out the most for me is that i can type a lot faster than writing so i don't get as frustrated when having to write a lot. also when i write online i have websites that are easily accessible to get ideas or even synonyms and random things like that. I think the most important thing to remember when transferring to the web is to make sure is very readable. maybe that means having a lot of space, headings and subheadings, and being concise.

Free Topic

The two things that I am thinking about right now and that i am going to right about are tests and basketball. Nothing is worse than studying for 29 years of your life for a test and then the teach taking 2389 days to get it back to you! Last week I took 3 tests and I feel lucky if I get them back before graduation. How long can it take to run a scantron through a machine and grade them? I know sometimes there are a lot of teachers doing it but still, there isn't a week plus worth of teachers doing it. There other thing im thinking about now is the ncaa basketball tournament. so much money is won and loss on each and every point that is scored! i would never start betting real money because i could see how addicting it would be. some online sites you can bet on everything from who gets the first tip ball or who fouls first. most guys think they are experts on sports and the spreads are so easy to win money on but if you actually bet some you see how smart and down to a science vegas has all the odds

Lies?

I can most definitely believe that at least 50% of people lie on their resume. Resumes are the deciding factor in who gets what jobs, and a person's job is their main source of income for their family. A better job could mean more money, more time off, or many other things that a person would lie for. I believe most lies are just exaggerations like a GPA. We talked about this in one of my mgt classes and a few other examples of types of lies on resumes besides exaggerations would be making stuff completely up like going to harvard grad school or saying you are a completely different person!
Another thing we talked about in that mgt class was how your reputation is the most important thing you have in the business world. If you lie on your resume and get caught, you are screwed! That is the single most biggest reason why I would not lie because it will haunt you for the rest of your career.

Class Presentations

Our classes presentations all were very good and very useful! Some of them were very short and one or two was very long. My favorite was the one about the stock markets because I like that stuff a lot but I just dont know a lot about it. He also handed out a crossword puzzle, by far the best hand out. My least favorite was the best football stadiums, i didnt agree with a lot of it. I learned a lot of stuff I never would have known about traveling to Mexico and also how to boil the perfect egg, two things I cant believe I have went so long in life without knowing! I was very very very very very sad that I did not get to present my presentation because I spent hours and even days making sure it would have been perfect for my classmates! OK you got me, I am kidding but hopefully I got a 100 for that assignment haha. I dont really know what else to type so i think this blog post is done for. see you next week my fav english 304 teacher!

Interview

First, I must say that the interviewing process with you was ROUGH! I was very nervous and worried about how well it would go because I knew you would critique me to no ends. Okay I am just joking because obviously it was not a very strenuous situation. I thought it was fun to do the mock interview and to see you pretend to me a representative of NIKE to be honest. I did not prepare for the interview at all but I was pleased with my answers and staying pretty calm, but I guess it was because I knew it was you and not a real NIKE person with a real internship riding on the line. The wait to be interviewed was worth it just because of the really loud girl talking about her awkward stories of her and her boyfriend with her parents. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about the process and it did help me since it gave me some exposure to being asked resume and personal questions on the spot. I will add that next time I will have to wear a suit since the person in front of me did and made me look bad!

Free Topic

I am glad this week has a free topic for the blog even though I have no clue what to write about! You would think it would be easy to come up with a fun, easy topic but nothing has hit me yet. I really don't like having to blog even though it is easy and does not take a long, I really don't know why. I am glad that I am in a regular class and not the online section though. The only thing really on my mind now is internship stuff for this summer. I have applied to a lot of different companies hoping to get a decent paying one that would be a lot of fun and teach me a lot, but apparently every college student in America is doing the same thing. I have came to the conclusion that I want a really sweet internship anywhere or a crappy one at a big time Fortune 100 company that would look good on my resume. I do not have any good stuff to put on my resume for a summer internship, much less a real job once I graduate. (Random thought- I really don't like how this blog window does not automatically capitalize i when you don't do it, that is how lazy and accustom I have become of Word's auto correct of 'i' to 'I') It is looking like that I will be working in Memphis as a sports marketing intern for FedEx and living with one of my best friends. I am pretty excited about it but it has not came through yet. The only reason I even have a shot is because my best friend's family knows the whole city of Memphis and all of the FedEx hot shots. So that is my quick little blog for the week, had to squeeze it in before the midnight deadline. See ya next week

Cover Letters

I do agree with all of the articles I read because they seem like they are a respectable source and I do not have any background in writing cover letters. I am a very visual person so the cover letter check list outlining the main things I need was the most beneficial to me because it listed the information without any fluff and with bullets.
The postscript technique was very interesting, I had never thought about doing that or have I ever read about that until now. It said to throw in a P.S. at the end and right a achievement you have had to make yourself sound good. Then the fact the recommended to handwrite the the P.S. was fairly weird to me but I def think it would get right away so that would be a good way to start out for the reader. I would use that technique and then all of the checklist material for my cover letter that is to be included in my portfolio. See ya next week!

Yahoo Articles

The two articles I chose were 'Four Questions to Ask a Potential Manager' and 'Six Common Job-Interview Questions.' The first article was great because it gave me some good advice on how to turn the tables on the interviewer and impress him by asking quality questions about himself and them company. Out of the 4 questions it said to ask your potential employer, the most unique one was what approach does he take when solving problems. I would want to know if I was dealing with a hardcore stickler who was tough on mistakes or if he was lenient. The second article was the most beneficial because it listed six of the most common questions that all interviewers ask. It would look great if I had a great answer prepared for every question they asked. A lot of the 6 I had heard before and would normally expect but I did not really expect the questions asking about behavior on the job and with other coworkers.
So the two articles I read were very informative and obviously if I would have read the other articles I would have learned a lot more about the process of interviewing. Besides the things I listed already that I learned, the main thing that I realized was that preparation and studying for the interview is the most important thing since so much studies have been done to help us to do well in them. See ya next week.

Persuasive Communication

In today's world being able to persuade someone is huge, especially in the business world. For this blog assignment I have chose Barack Obama's 2004 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address. Personally I have not decided who I am voting for yet but Obama has a good shot at getting my vote. I was interested to read the transcript of this address where he supported John Kerry in the 2004 election. I have no idea if he actually writes his own speeches but they are all amazing. No matter how good Obama may use rhetoric it does not compare to MLK's letter when I read both of them. I do not know that much about rhetoric or even english for that matter but I do know that MLK's letter is supposed to be the say all, end all when it comes to best use of rhetoric. Now once I compare Obama's speech to the Army recruiters presentation it seems that he is the best user of rhetoric that the world has ever seen. I mean no disrespect to the 3 presenters but they could not have convinced me to do one thing that day. Maybe they don't have a lot of skill in the area or they just weren't on their game. Granted, I know they weren't trying to persuade me that day but from what I observed they did not have a chance if they actually tried.

Here are a few examples of Barack Obama's use of rhetoric in his address:

Ethos- I understand this to be appeal based on the character of the speaker. His speech did not ever bring attention to the fact that Obama is highly educated and a "good person" because of his audience. He was at the Democratic National Convention so it was no big deal that he has a great education because everyone there also has the same education. The way he delivered, no recited, his speech really appealed a lot to me that he knew what he was doing and he was supposed to be there. He did once mention talking to mill workers that I think would help his ethos.

Logos- I understand this to be appeal based on logic or reason. This seems that it would be a lot of scholarly information and big words but i'm not sure about that. I think the best use of logos is his argument in the speech that the US should be about hope not cynicism, about accepting not condemning, and about togetherness not red vs blue states.

Pathos- I understand this to be appeal based on emotion. Barack Obama has a lot of this in his speech. He talks about union workers losing their jobs to Mexico and then not having benefits or money to pay for their children's medicine.

My Life....in 10 Years

Well this is most definitely an interesting blog assignment. Ten years from now seems like such a long time, I will be in my 30s! I would like to have the most amazing wife and probably a few kids by this time. Hopefully I will have a good job that provides enough income so my wife does not have to work a lot. 30 is not all that old career wise so realistically I can not assume to have a really high paying job where i don't put in a ton of hours. I would like to be around the upstate because I love my hometown of Greer and the Greenville area. My family would not be far away from the coast and the mountains....I LOVE both of these two! I have not traveled that much in life but I do enjoy it a lot so hopefully in ten years I will have been overseas to see interesting places and you never know, maybe a house on the Mediterranean. Overall, I don't really know how my life will play in the next ten years, but I cant wait to see how it unfolds!

Web 2.0

I liked this video, but it is a tad scary some things it shed light on. In my opinion I think the subject “Web 2.0” means that the internet is used for a lot of other things now, not just the traditional stuff. It is now being used for networking, more intense file sharing, and even sketchy, illegal things that a lot of bad people do to take advantage of other people. I had never thought about how the internet could affect new people trying to enter the workforce before but I definitely think it does now after seeing this video. Facebook alone is basically affecting everyone in a million kinds of ways. But in businesses in particular it is affecting it a lot. People can now have video conferences with the touch of the button or business data and information sharing could not be easier. It affects people already in the workplace because it allows for clients and other people to have meetings no matter where they are in the world. The part of the clip I agree with the most is that we need to rethink everything. If we are not careful, the internet could become out of control and the biggest weapon for anyone to use.

Introduction to myself

Well then, I never thought I would be writing a blog on wonderful blogger.com. My name is Ryan Henson and I am a Junior management major. I am taking the business writing class because it is a requirement for me. I always hate doing these introduction assignments at the beginning of every semester. I am from Greer, SC and have lived in the upsate all of my life. I have always been a Clemson fan so the application process for college was very simple, one application with no entry essays to Clemson was all I had to do. The past two and half years have been the best in my life and it's sad whenever you think of graduation. I would like to think I have made the most of my time here at Clemson so far though. I am a Young Life leader at McCants Middle School, I am involved with several organizations on campus, and I love doing everything but school work ha! So in the spirit of business writing, i am cutting this blog short and keeping it efficient. See ya next week.
